May 8th happens to be the birthday of Hiromu Arakawa (荒川 弘), the Japanese manga artist who created Fullmetal Alchemist. To celebrate, we're watching an episode of the Fullmetal Alchemist TV anime and a Fullmetal Alchemist short animation called "Kids".
Showings are presented in Japanese language audio with English subtitles and are suggested for ages 13 and over unless otherwise specified. Starting times are approximate: Come early! "Great Distance in The Wind, The Sky at Dawn - Chapter 2 & 3" - Youko Nakajima, previously a high school student from modern Japan, has become the Queen of Kei and is having difficulties with her rule. In Sai, Suzu Ooki from feudal Japan indentured herself to a cruel mistress. In Hou, Shoukei took the name Gyokuyou and is now in an orphanage after losing her position as a princess. Suzu and Shoukei hear that the Queen of Kei is their age and react very differently.

Also, FanimeCon is opening Gilles Poitras's "Anime for Parents" panel to the public. Author and librarian Gilles Poitras wrote Anime Essentials, the book on "Every Thing a Fan Needs to Know" about Japanese popular culture. His influential panels have introduced anime to people at Pixar, the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco, and the Smithsonian. The free panel, "Anime for Parents", will take place Friday, May 29, 7PM - 8PM in the Salon III room of the San Jose Marriott, and it addresses questions and concerns parents have about what their children may be watching.
FanimeCon is May 28 - May 31, 2010 at the San Jose Convention Center. Online reservations are open until May 19th. After that, memberships may only be purchased at the event itself. Guests of Honor for this year include Guity Gear creator Daisuke Ishiwatari, BlazBlue creator Toshimichi Mori, illustrator Mamoru Yokota, and electrock band LM.C. Many favorites from previous years are also returning, such as GAINAX executive Hiroyuki Yamaga, Japanese pop idol Halko Momoi, and Avatar stunt double Reuben Langdon.
